10 Summer Albums to Keep Your Ears Happy

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

It is summer, it is hot, and new music release Tuesday has been very very lame lately.

Here are 10 albums to listen to this summer.

1. Zach Williams-Story Time

zach williams

This album is one of the best albums I have listened to in a very long time. Listen to it a couple times a week. Cannot stop talking about this guy. Definitely a must.

2. NeedToBreathe-Outsiders

Along with Story Time by Zach Williams this CD has been another non stop listen. Love everything about this album. Now just to see them live.

3. Jon Foreman-Summer EP

All of Jon Foreman’s EP collection is amazing. Go figur that I would pick his summer EP as the one to listen to in the summer. If you have not listened to this yet you need to stop everything and do it now. Completely different sound then switchfoot. I think you will like this.

4. Dave Matthews Band-Live in Central Park

Dave Matthews Band

There is something about listening to Dave Matthews Band Live. I actually prefer their live stuff over their actual studio recordings. This to me is one of the best live albums DMB has done. Cortez the Killer is one of my favorite DMB songs, and the version on this song is killer.

5. Civil Twilight-Civil Twilight

Civil Twilight

I discovered this band thanks to my friends Brennan and Zack. Pretty epic band from South Africa that has a very capturing sound. Definitely a summer favorite.

6. Shad-The Old Prince

I am a newbie to Shad, but I am a fan. From listening to the relevant podcast I discovered the song “ya I get it” after that I was a fan. Great artist from Canada (I look past the being from Canada part)

7. Josh Garrels-Over Oceans

Josh Garrels

Just introduced to be a performer at Story Conference 2010 I decided to give him a shot and really like what I am hearing. He has an interesting sound that is not typical and yet feels real and not forced. Very unique and like him a lot.

8. David Crowder Band-Summer Happiness (Acoustic Album)

David Crowder Band

This wouldn’t be a music list without talking about The David Crowder *Band. They are in my top three bands of all time, so you can guess why I list them here. But you should check out their latest 5 track summer happiness acoustic album.

You will have to buy this one here no grooveshark yet

9. Dave Barnes-What We Want, What We Get

Dave Barnes

When Dave Barnes came to my college a couple of years back I was pretty skeptical, but after listening to a couple of songs I became an instant fan and I think you will as well. He has a new album out just in time for the summer.

10. U2-All of It

You should listen to every album they have ever made. That is your summer assignment…listen to it all.

Honarable mention: The Swell Season. They are more of a fall type of music. So maybe you want to start looking towards the fall by listening to their stuff.

Who you will not see on this list: Anything by Kid Rock. More specifically any classic song that he has taken (see Sweet Home Alabama) and disgraced by these type of lyrics: “Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking ’bout tomorrow…Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long” You will not see that on the list. Nor will you see Jason Mraz, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, or any of that other crap out there…can someone say Justin Beiber.

Any Suggestions?

Blue Merle – Burning in the Sun
Mika – Life in Cartoon Motion
Daniel Powter – Daniel Powter (just ignore the overplayed song)
    David Ryan Harris – Soulstice
Edwin McCain – Scream and Whisper
Hootie and the Blowfish – Cracked Rear View (You know you like it.)
    Jon McLaughlin – Indiana
    Josh Kelley – Almost Honest
    Keane – Hopes and Fears
    Mae – The Everglow
    Marc Broussard – Carencro
    Owl City – Ocean Eyes

I love how Hootie is in there with Mae and Owl City and even Keane.

Needtobreathe are AWESOME live!! But I’ve already told you that. I’m glad to see DCB up there as well.

I don’t have a summer album that I love… But my favorite songs on the playlist I’ve been listening too all summer are:

Something Good Can Work – Two Door Cinema
    Swamp – Matthew Mayfield
    21@12 – Hot Hot Heat
    Hollywood – Codeine Velvet Club
Swim Until You Can’t See Land – Frightened Rabbit
    Sweet Disposition – Temper Trap

Interesting, honestly have not heard of any of these bands so I will have to check them out.

Totally gonna check these out, I’d have to make NeedToBreathe my number one if i created a list like this, i really do listen to them nonstop. Don’t be jealous but I’m going to see them again in August! (again my ticket and everything paid for!) EEEEE cannot wait, they’re playing with Train… who I don’t know well but I have 58 days 7 hours and 56 minutes to discover them (no i don’t have a count down on my dashboard on my mac ;D )

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

I do hate you indeed. Second time, and for free.
I really want to see them.

      • http://twitter.com/shelbyisrad Shelby

        hating is mean :p
I hope you get to see them they are quite amazing!
OH and I just one David Crowder’s EP in vinyl, digital copy, and the church music CD!

        • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

    The black keys
Edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros
    The national
    Broken bells
    Frightened rabbit
Those are what I’m listening to right now.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

Oh the black keys, I need to listen to them more.

I see you’re a Grooveshark fan – best place to check out music. As long as you skip the overplayed tracks, gotta check out Train’s “Save Me San Francisco” although I guess it’s almost a year old now. Some others I’ve had on constant repeat for a long time now, although very much mainstream now:

    OneRepublic – “Waking Up”
    MuteMath – “Armistice”
She & Him – “Volume Two”
Snow Patrol – “A Hundred Millions Suns”
    Lifehouse – “Smoke and Mirrors”
    The Fray – “The Fray”

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

I actually listened to MuteMath Worship (an album they recorded before they were mutemath) yesterday. Reminded me how much I love them

Guys get a clue: Mumford & Sons.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

You know the funny thing is I had them on my list at number 7 then took them off because I listened to them a lot in the spring. But they should be on the list.
