A New Blog and A New Title

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

Sometimes you need to change some things up to give you the motivation you need.

At least that is what I was hoping a new blog design would bring. Instead it just brought months of wanting to change things but never taking the time to do make the changes. Today marks the end of that period of not making any changes. I guess this is the 2.0 version of the site. Complete with a new design, a refocused desire, and a hope to be a place of conversation, resources, and fun.

As you notice the url of this site and the title of this site are a little different. Thoughtsaboutnothing.com was a title that I have had since I was a junior in high school. To be honest, I never gave the title to much thought when choosing. All I knew was that I had to pick a title and the first thing that came to my mind was thoughts about nothing. When I got into using wordpress I stuck with having an oddly titled blog and url.

As you know, saying that you have thoughts about nothing can be kinda counter-productive. I have been looking to make a change for a while and a couple of months ago stumbled upon this quote from Sir Isaac Newton:

If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.

I loved that concept. Standing on the shoulders of giants so that you can see further. To me that encompassed everything that I wanted to be about. Whether it is me standing on others shoulders or others standing on my shoulders, it gave a beautiful picture of community. After searching for a new title of my blog I finally stuck with Standing on Giants and was happy. I even went as far as to write a guest post about it for a blog series on mentoring.

There are a couple of things that you can find here on the blog that I really want to highlight.

1. Resources

I use to do a series called Resource of the Day. It was a series that highlighted resources from the web and brought them to you the reader. Being someone who likes to share with others I have decided to bring this back, just in a different way. I guess you could call this the 2.0 version. It will not be a daily thing, but this site will now feature resources available for you to check out and use. Providing you reviews, tips, and how-to’s, these resources will be a main feature on this blog.

2. Weekly Features

If content is king, then consistency is queen. I love having featured content that is featured each week. As a new staple to this site you will see not only resources available but a couple featured post each and every week. Here is a breakdown:

Tuesday: Music Tuesday
Highlights music that you might want to check out and gives you a chance to listen on the site

Thursday: Twitter Thursday
I thought about calling this twitter twursday, but that is cheesy, lets be honest. Twitter Thursday provides you a couple post that are only 140 characters long. Cutting through all the junk and getting straight to the point.

Sunday: Questions for You
Its simple, these are questions for you to answer and for us to learn more about you.

3. Vlogging

As awkward as that sounds, I hope to do more video post. The inspiration for this comes from the Tent Blogger himself, John Saddington. I think John brought up a great point in the fact that video allows for a lot more personal connection in a post rather then words. Hoping to always be very transparent and personal, I think video post will not only allow for better interaction but will also allow for more post and more discussion. I think the ratio will still be 3:1 in regards to written vs video, but I hope to do a lot more video posting. For more on this idea read John’s or actually watch John’s thoughts here

4. Conversation

The most important thing about this blog is the conversations that take place. Whether it be a question I ask, a post I write, or a comment you leave, conversation is king on this blog. This has been a great place of conversation and I am very thankful for that. So continue to comment and conversate.

I hope you like the changes and some of the new content that will be coming your way.

Be on the lookout, I have some other stuff coming down the pike (or is it pipe?) soon.

Nice. Been contemplating making some changes to mine as well. I’ve had the same thing in place since I started blogging. No real clear direction of what I’m writing about. Mine currently claims “Veracious Thoughts of a Wonderer.” Quite similar to Thoughts about nothing. I want people to have a clear understanding of what they will be getting from me. Think that can be important for us bloggers launching out into the blogoshpere.
Again, like yourself, I’ve gotten complacent with some staples I started out with. Sometimes when there’s no engagement it’s hard to keep doing things like that. I had some things going like Web Wednesday, where I started telling everyone about friends sites that were out there. And 7siteSaturday where I listed all the sites that were influential for me throughout the week. Think I’ll kick up 7site again.
Thanks for sharing your direction and reasoning. It’s good influence.

Love the 7sites idea. That would be awesome to check out.

I like the title as well.

Very excited :) looks great man. I think the first comment I ever left you was on how much I liked your domain name. Haha.

When I moved from wordpress.com to self-hosted, I was a little nervous. But as it came together, I started getting more exited and let the cat out a little early. I ended up going live earlier than planned and making further changes as I went along. At this point, I think I might actually be suffering from feature creep and need to pull back a bit.

I enjoy hearing people break the fourth wall and talk about their own site design. Anyway, I look forward to all you’ve got planned.

Especially the bare tree. Bare trees are awesome design elements. ;)

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

thanks dude. I love the trees. Hoping it would give a good feel and kind of symbolize standing in the trees type feel.
