Are you a Canal or Resevoir

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

Yesterday I was challenged with this thought from Colossians 4:2-6 that said the goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation. That stuck with me for the rest of the day. I wonder how I had been bringing the best out of others in conversation? Or for that matter what it even meant to bring the best out of others.

“If then you are wise, you will show yourself rather as a reservoir than as a canal. For a canal spreads abroad water as it receives it, but a reservoir waits until it is filled before overflowing, and thus communicates, without loss to itself, its superabundant water. In the Church at the present day, we have many canal, few reservoirs.” —->Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

What does it mean to bring out the best in others through conversations?

I remember, oh so long ago, I wanted to change my approach in how I communicated things. I wanted to be the guy that when he opens his mouth everyone listens. At my college cafeteria, I sat down and said nothing, just listening to people talk. After about five minutes, people started to ask what was wrong with me and why I was being so silent. I told a friend of what I was trying to do and he bluntly told me, “that's not who you are, so stop trying to make yourself something you are not.”
What I have found is based on how I develop my private spiritual life determines my public oratorical life. If I have the Word in me and I am allowing the Spirit to have His way in me, the overflow will naturally be there. If we till the ground in private, the abundance will be fruitful. I only wish I could say I practice what I write above with stellar discipline but I can't deny the truth no matter what it is.

I have really tried to make it a priority that I connect myself with people so that I can then connect other people to others that are looking for resources etc…

That would probably take some serious humility.

      Ya, exactly.
Hard not to be concerned about wanting to talk about yourself. Very difficult.

hi kyle, somehow i stumbled upon your blog and you did speak to me in this write up. i realize that its not so easy for most people to bring out the best in others , but i have come to enjoy the gift i have, the ability to love people, encourage and help bring the best out of them either by complementing on their clothes or by letting them know how blessed you are to have them in your life. i feel fulfilled each time i am bringing out the best in some1, its not always that easy to forget yourself and focus on some1else.
    nice post
