Did you ever do that as a kid (or maybe you still do)? I remember when Instant Messaging was the coolest thing you could do on the internet. Not only could you talk with your friends you could talk with complete strangers. Usually the conversation went something like this…A/S/L—-15/M/STL. Then from there you would start the conversation that would last for about 2 minutes. Who knew who you were actually talking to, I was just looking to talk to girls.

I thought we would update A/S/L a little bit and ask you, the blog readers (even you people who read but never comment…Jamie) who are you? You can share your age, sex, location if you want, but share your blog or website, what you do, and what you like to do your twitter handle, etc….Lets bring a very classic method of figuring out who was on the other end of the computer to the blog world.

A/S/L

Why does this feel like spam?

      • http://twitter.com/mcblake Mark Blake

Because its third person. And the beginning is bolded. But mostly because its in third person.

        • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Ya, I just find it funny that they would take the time to write all of this and yet it seems very disconnecting.

      • http://www.tabithas-team.com/ kelly@Tabitha's Team

LOL. Kyle, I was just following your format in your example :) Beginning bold, 3rd person description and twitter name. Being the first commenter, that was the only example right above me. (I'm such a rule follower) – and I'm too old to know what “A/S/L” is without you're explanation, so I guess that reveals a little about my reader demographic and how there's little benefit to my advertisement here. But I RSS this blog because you have good thoughts, show a desire for wisdom, and leave interesting comments at blogs I read.

        • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Well good to know that it is not spam now…
You are right, you were following protocol and now we are all paying attention.

And thanks for the last part there. You are not a spammer, I take back my comments.

          • http://www.tabithas-team.com/ kelly@Tabitha's Team

You're a good guy and I never doubted your heart. I knew it was just a misunderstanding. However, now I feel guilty that I made a male in his mid-20's read a site for stressed-out moms! Please don't ever put yourself through that torture again. The whole point of the matter is I am one of your lurking fans. Have a great day!

            • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Well, now you are not a lurker anymore.
              Thanks for understanding.

I work at Chili's and go to school online. A recovering Baptist, I go to a fantastic church that meets in the basement of an old bank. And yes, I do lurk on blogs without commenting.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Mark, thanks for moving from a lurker to a commenter.
I will be looking for more comments from you to come.
And Chilis is one of my favorite places to eat, big mouth bites burgers ftw!

My name is Marshall Jones Jr.; I'm a 20 year old male; I live in beautiful Louisville, Kentucky; and I think this is the first time I've ever used semi-colons in a comment. Don't worry – I'll stop using them after this.

I like drinking carrot juice and pretend I like to jog.

My blog is a practical guide for serving others… and Kyle is guest posting over there tomorrow (Tuesday). Check it.

    P. S. Click my name to follow me on twitter… I've probably follow back.

Marshall, carrot juice sounds gross…and I have a friend that lives in Louisville.
He works at Southeast Christian Church. Have you heard of that church?

Lame, you can do better then that.
Well I guess you have been on the blog before and told us about yourself. So maybe this is good enough.

25/m/Atlanta (you'll never see me refer to it as ATL).

I'm a geek to the max. I write software for a living and spend more time than I'd like to admit at my home computer doing some type of development. I'm into guitaring, running, hanging out with the wife (no kids – yet), and a few other things.

I'm kinda into the blogging thing, too. More Than Useless started out as a place for me to publicly talk about some of the issues I have (both good and bad) with Christianity. Since then, it's grown into a weekly journal of all things faith, life, and other stuff.

http://dannyjbixby.blogspot.com — I'm not nearly cool enough for my own domain

I take it that you did the same as me and ended the conversation as soon as you saw the dreaded “M” in the A/S/L? After all, we only did it trying to find girls. Which was a failure as there are no girls on the internet.

    It's science.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

It is science and yet it always ended with the M.

You are cool enough to at least have a wordpress instead of a blogger account, just sayin.

Tempted to just put my twitter bio here, but I won't.

    – For cash, I currently manage an audio/comms company, and a significant portion of my team is currently in Vancouver to provide event communications for the Winter Olympics. How I ended up doing this I don't know; I'm an accountant by profession.

    – For non-cash, just finished 3 years as music director and 5 years on the business board of my church (resigned in preparation for the emigration, of course)

    – Passionate about mentoring…you know that already.

And…I recently “came out” as an ex-gay, whatever that means. Still working out, with the help of various people, how that's meant to affect my ministry life from this point on. I've got this story for a reason, so better do what God wants me to do with it huh :)

    http://www.davidgoodwin.com

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Thanks for sharing David. I love the Olympics, and so how you got that opportunity is beyond me, but that is awesome.

      • http://davidgoodwin.com David

The company has done this sort of thing across the globe since the Sydney Olympics. This is our first winter gig though. I'm going to miss it when I leave, great bunch of people to work with.

Geeze I'm old or something. I feel like the granddaddy around all of the others commenting here.

I have a blog at http://jeffreyholton.blogspot.com that intends to focus on connecting people with other people, people with ideas, and, on rare occasion, seemingly unrelated ideas with other ideas. Fortunately, that's a pretty broad definition.

    I'm on Twitter as @JeffHolton.

What do I do? Hmm… I think I'm in high-tech, or something. Or pre-sales engineering. Or technical training. Or instructional design. I'm not really sure. I've been more-or-less out of work for about 27 months. It kinda stinks. I wanna go back to doing what I do best, which is finding out what it is that I want to do best.
