Blog Header Redesign

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

I am working on a couple of new blog headers and wanted to see which one you liked the most.
Maybe I am redesign because of someone said: “When I look at it, I think Microsoft Word 93 made that” Kidding….

The reason for the new header is that I have finally got a new theme. It is called the Standard Theme, and is the best coded wordpress theme ever.
Go and check out the standard theme here at www.standardtheme.com

Along with the new site design (and to be honest it is the best coded theme ever and google loves it) I also wanted to explain the meaning of the buffaloes.

I have had a lot of questions as to why I would have two buffaloe (or are they bison?) in my header?
Like this one:

I have decided to let you know why I have the two buffaloes in my header.
I picked them to be my animal, probably because of my obsession with U2 and this album art here
but mainly because I like the idea of two animals running at each other head on (get it, head on…header). To me it symbolizes what this blog is all about, ideas that are running head on at each other. Not all the thoughts here are meant to be something that but up against each other, but they are a conversation piece, a place to talk and think about different things.
This is the reason for the buffaloes and the imagery.

With all that said, please vote on which one you think would be the best header to display on the best coded wordpress theme ever.

Let me know which one you like, if any?

**and if you don’t like any of them, then we are both out of luck.

I'm digging #1. #4 is my second choice. Good to finally know the reason for the buffalo. I had veen curious myself. Now it all makes sense.

Actually since seeing Tom's site, I'm thinking you should incorporate that cookie cake pic somewhere. haha

      • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

        Ya, hahaha, laugh it up.

I like #5… Not gonna lie, #4 looks like someone dropped a deuce on the N.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

number 4 is actually not suppose to look like that.
On the N is another buffaloe but he slipped down,he is really suppose to be up there with his friend and they are going head to head.

      lol!

SPEC! Asking us to choose is like SPEC!

Sorry. It's just whenever there is a question of design and the word “choose the best” people will undoubtedly start yelping about “spec work.”

That being said, #1 is the best.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Good point Jay, I actually hate spec stuff myself (even though i do a lot of it).

But at least you chose one.

      • jaycaruso

Don't get me wrong. As a creative myself, I understand the issue. If somebody came to me and said, “Shoot some portraits for me and if I like them, I'll pay you” I'd tell them to get lost, but sometimes people get way too touchy over the subject.

        • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

Ya, I actually did some graphic work for a college. Knowing that they were a college and would be good for the money I did it. After doing the work and coming up with a design I thought looked great they said they didn't like some of it and stripped back a lot of it. And on top of that after all the work they thanked me for my “donation” of service to the college. I was pretty upset

1 and 5 – 1 better becasue it adds a little color to the mix. But both are look good
I've got a great idea: Why don't you photo-shop your face 0n one of the buffalo's? Just a thought :)

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

So the pic of me is not that creepy?

      • http://twitter.com/baylormum Shellie Kubicki

The color pic is kind of creepy now that you mention it!

  • kevindeshazo

tough choice. i like 1, 2 and 5. mostly 1 and 5. maybe 1 more than 5. maybe not. not helpful, but better than liking all of them, or liking none of them.

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

No that helps, what about the pic of me on there, is that a little weird or okay?

      • kevindeshazo

Good question. I always wonder the same thing (which is why I have a pic on the “about me” page and not my main page. Though, really, I don't find it creepy/weird. For me it's mostly a self-conscious issue.

*as I tread very lightly here* My preference is #5. If you are keeping your background light grey, no color is okay. And since it's not an actual photo of you (but a photo turned to art) is makes the “I Photoshopped the background out of this” less obvious, which is good. I have a pet peeve with that.

And if I'm being totally honest, I actually like #2, but #5 seems to be more indicative of what your blog is about. (And making it smaller than the existing one will also help things visually. I'm on a macbook an your current header takes up half my screen right now.)

    • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com @kylelreed

You do not have to tread lightly, I was joking at the beginning of the post.

      Thanks for the help though.
I actually have been obsessed with photoshoping myself out of things and then putting myself in Egypt. I knew how to do it, just never did it before.

I wonder why my header takes up so much space. It is at 800×240
guess I need to work on that as well.

      • http://twitter.com/stephanienels Stephanie Nelson

        I figured… :)

Could be a macbook thing. we don't have the biggest screens in the first place.

FYI, we are at 750×150 for height on our banners at Central's web site http://www.centralpres.com. We use Fireworks to build them.

  • http://manofdepravity.com Tyler Braun

    I like 3 and 5.

  • http://dubdynomite.com dubdynomite

    I like #5

  • http://www.technologyright.com/ Jason

Hey Kyle – I really like number 5. Then number 3 as a second choice.

  • http://twitter.com/baylormum Shellie Kubicki

    #5

  • http://davidgoodwin.com David

    #3 & #5… Probably #5 the most

  • http://jonathanpearson.net/ Jonathan Pearson

Don't know if the votes are still being tallied, but I'm going with #2. #1 would be my 2nd choice.
