I Need You To Mentor Me

For a while now mentoring has been on my heart. It is in a lot of what I write about, thinking about, and conversate about.

And ever time I start talking about mentoring I see a huge breakdown between the mentor and mentee.

The breakdown is this:

Mentee: I am afraid to ask.
Mentor: I am afraid to assume.

The mentee is afraid to ask because they could be rejected, they do not understand exactly what they are asking for, and they do not want to be a burden.
The mentor is afraid to assume because they do not know if they can offer good advice, if they have anything to share, and if anyone is interested in listening.

In this constant battle of mentoring and 20 somethings I think the biggest thing that needs to happen is to break down the barrier.

Here is where I need your help.

I need you to record a video of yourself (no matter your age) saying this:

“I Need You To Mentor Me”

That is it. Very simple and easy. Just submit the video link in the comment section or email it to me here, or @ reply a link on twitter here. Whatever you want. But I need everyone to do this.

Share it with everyone you know, even your mom. Because this message is so important that everyone needs to be apart of this, everyone needs mentoring. So take to twitter, facebook, google, or wherever all the cool kids hang out and ask them to record a video asking for mentors.

Together we can break down the barriers of mentors and mentorees.

    Great to see mentoring promoted though. In the ministry I help lead we are currently working through how to develop a culture of mentoring better. It is something we’ve done a bit of in the past, we’ve even run short training courses on mentoring relationships centred round reading the bible together. Some people have kept going with it after the course finished or have gotten involved without doing the course, but there is certainly room to expand the reach and quality of mentoring in the ministry.

    Dude, you nailed this. Most situations with a mentor and mentee are exactly as you said it. I hope this idea can start the discussion and help open doors of communication on both sides.

    Kyle, this is great. I love what you are doing here. I have had a mentor since I was in my 20′s and sought wisdom, without terming it that since I entered puberty. Almost always, I did the recruiting…mostly for the reasons you mentioned. I just pick someone further down the road and ask them if I can walk with them a while. Right now I have two primary mentors, both in their early 70′s.  

    Good work! Keep being intentional.

    Brilliant. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was asked to mentor a young man writing his first play. I haven’t had a mentor, so I am nervous, but it sounds like the experience will help us both. Retweeting and passing this along.

    I think you hit the nail on the head with the “I’m afraid to ask” and “I’m afraid to assume.” I see that so often in discipleship. The confidence factor in who we are and who are created to be is huge. 

    I have been calling people into discipleship for years and this is always one of the biggest obstacles.

      yes I agree. And honestly when someone takes an interest in you it makes a huge difference. But that barrier is still there
