One Thing

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

I am not physically fit.

In fact I have more fat mass then muscle mass. In search of a solution I turned to google and searched the word “Diets”, google returned 19,500, 000 pages. Seems like that is more then enough info for me to find what I was looking for. In fact I was saturated by information, even overwhelmed. As I printed off my new diet plan I couldn’t help but wonder if it was going to be beneficial.

Shane Hipps in his book “Flickering Pixels” says:

“If we are not alert, the info age may stunt our growth and create a permanent puberty of the mind.”

With so much information out there, where do you begin?

Now maybe you are not searching for diets or how to have 10,000 followers on twitter, but you might be looking for one thing, for one thing that you can do to impact others. Today, I would like to share with you one thing that I find very important for you as a leader to understand, influence.

Your influence reaches out to many. People are watching and learning from you. This could be a very scary thought or one that gives you great energy and passion. No matter how you view this, you are influencing others.

I have several conversations with people about mentoring regularly. One thing they often tell me is that they are searching for a mentor. I find this challenging and difficult. Instead of being pursued, a generation is looking to be influenced and shaped. I want to call you to be the influencers that are leading out mentoring relationship. A relationship that shares life together and learns from conversation, life experience, and the grace of God. Today, I would like to encourage you to be specific with your influencing, to go out of your way to notice, and to be one that calls others to lead.

How can you be an influencer?

I think the biggest way to influence someone is just by being who you were created to be. In other words just be yourself. Too often, we fall into the traps that we have to be like so and so in order to make a difference.

    Really good stuff man.

great point, trying to be someone else is never a good way to influence. I guess everything starts with finding out who you were created to be

      Agreed and Agreed.

I like the word ‘influence’ much better then the word lead or leadership. I agree with the thought that everyone is influencing someone. At all times, no matter what your doing someone is watching and possibly learning from you. How much more of an influence could you be to the world around you if it’s intentional. This of course implies that you as the influencer are first seeking to live like Jesus.

I believe and agree there is no better way to influence the world around you by being yourself. God made us/me to be the person he wanted us to be. So rather then aspiring to be like someone else or lead like someone else we need to seek God and ask him to continue to mold us into the person he created. At our church we are really beginning to focus on Discipleship via life on life and community living. We have a saying or an expression that we use when asking someone to come be discipled. We would say ‘come with me as I follow Jesus’ basically meaning I’m not Jesus, don’t follow and imitate me but come with me and lets follow Jesus together.

Thanks for the good thoughts and encouragement today Kyle.
