The 3 People I Want To Learn From

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

There is a Chinese Proverbs that says this:

A single conversation with a wise man is better than ten years of study

This has consistently been true in my life. I have learned from some great men and women over time. Being someone who learns by seeing and then doing, I have always sought out conversation over studying. I would much rather watch and learn then read and learn.

I wanted to kick off this huge week of list (the greatest blog week of the year) with a list of 3 people that I would love to learn from.

I wanted to give you a little background behind the point of this list and how I picked this list. The main focus of this list are 3 individuals that I want to work with and learn from. This is not a list of people from afar, but a list of people that I would love to work with every single day. These are individuals that I have either had conversations with in the past or watched from afar. They demonstrate great leadership, creativity and have that sense of curiosity about them that makes you want to be around them.

Without any further waiting, here are the 3 people I want to learn from:

1. Tony Steward

It all started 2 years ago. Tony and I got the opportunity share a room at John Saddingtons house and got some time to talk (we were bunk mates) and from then I have been a big Tony Steward fan. Recently at Catalyst this year me and Tony talked for an hour about everything and I realized once again that I wish I worked with Tony Steward every day. He is one of those guys that thinks strategically about everything, but has a way of explaining his thoughts in plain english. He knows something about everything and is one of the brains behind church online at Tony Steward is one guy that I would love to work under and learn from.

2. Brad Zimmerman

3 years ago Brad launched a website called and started putting together free video podcast to resource the church. From the day I found his site I have watched what Brad has to say from afar and have greatly benefited from his site and vodcast. He knows everything about creative design and has a huge passion for resourcing the church. This year we got to meet up at Story conference and had a life-giving conversation. I left that place feeling smarter, happier and even more curious to learn. Brad is definitely someone I want to work under and learn from.

3. Gary Vaynerchuk

I think this one is obvious. I mean I post every new video of his on this blog as soon as I see them. I love Gary’s passion, hustle, and heart for what he does. He has taught me a ton already about social media and caring about others. And as someone who loves to think outside the box to find solutions and meet others needs, Gary has continued to inspire me to press forward and work hard. I have never gotten the chance to meet Gary, and honestly will probably never get to work with Gary, but I can still learn from Gary. Gary Vee is definitely someone I want to work under and learn from.

These are just 3 of the many people that I would love to work with and learn from. I view every day as a chance to talk with people and gain insight about life. It has been a huge honor to get to talk with some great people and watch them as they lead and develop ideas, companies, and products. I cannot wait to see who I will learn from next, but you never know, it could be you.

Who is someone you want to work under and learn from?

Your post really got me thinking, so I came up with a list of my own (and of course blogged about it). They are: Donald Miller, Rob Bell and Louie Giglio.

I saw that post. Great stuff really, and great guys to learn from

  • Michael

I plan on doing this later in the week. And I’m being serious with this.

    1. Brewster
    2. You
    3. Saddington

Cant wait to see the list.
I will have to say that I am truly blessed to have been able to learn from each of those guys you mentioned.

this past year, some of the people i learned the most from aren’t people i had on any such list…or even would have put on such a list. and i’d say three of them are people i want to continue to learn from.

    1. Ben Arment – working alongside him with STORY is a lesson in leadership & audacious faith that you can’t possibly put a value on

    2. Gary Molander – never met him offline but his willingness to share honestly and true to his heart is incredible

    3. Michael Buckingham – one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met. He is passionate about what he does but he is always true to his heart for people in the process and I love that.

I think if I had to pick someone new I’d say a guy like Daley Hake because I love his photography and it’s a passion that one of these days I want to pursue further.

I guess it seems like for me it’s more often who people are that makes me want to learn from them than what they do.

that is cool how you never would have expected to be given the opportunity to learn from people that you admire from afar and then be able to work with them in person. We truly have been blessed with great leaders.

  • Brian Notess

Let’s see, for web-development, I have a code-crush on Nathan Smith and Tom McFarlin.

On the media side, I’d love to follow the guys from Prolifik Films around for a while.

yes, Tom is the man. Great guy as well. He is very talented.
