Momentum has the ability to change the course of human history. Usually momentum is only mentioned in science classes and sporting events. Describing the unexplainable force that moves something in ones favor is a mystery that is tamed by very few and sought after by many.
Momentum is best seen in sporting events. Turning the tide from one team to another (interesting to see that “the tide” is all about momentum as well). This usually happens in a blink of an eye, and once you have it, things change.
Momentum is not always relegated for sporting events. Life is full of momentum, we just call it another thing, progression. When things progress we often see things changing. Whether that be a job that is taking off, a dating relationship that is progressing to the next level, or that small business that you started finally landing that contract that will save your business. Progression is all about moving forward and is what makes or breaks people. But I think progression kind of gives us a bad picture of a life filled with momentum. Progression gives this idea of moving forward, that things are changing and changing for the good. Where this can be a problem, like most of you know, things do not always move forward and progress like we want. Momentum on the other hand goes all over the place.
Momentum is more like a rip current. You know that feeling being caught in wave after it has broke on the ocean floor? That full force power that is moving you back out to the ocean and then back into the shore. That is momentum at its finest. Progression is more like a stream of water. It continues to flow in one direction. When you are moving down stream you have no resistance, but when you are trying to go upstream, you are met with great force and deterrence.
Momentum greatly represents the way that life moves. At one point you think you are moving forward towards your goal, at the next point you are being pushed back in the direction you came from. If only we could figure out how to move momentum in one direction things would be easy. Jesus had other ideas. In John 16:33 (Thanks Tim Tebow) Jesus tells us how “easy” life will be.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Momentum is not always about getting your way. It is more about letting God get in the way. When we let God get in the way of the direction we are headed, our paths change and we are changed forever. When this happens we have all the momentum in the world and the course of human history is changed forever, because we have already won. Momentum can change you forever. It could be a silly blog post, a scripture verse, a song on the radio, or an chance of a life time, once that momentum hits you are in for a change.
