Why I Wish I Worked For a Book Publisher or Magazine Publisher

Kyle Reed // @kylereed

I wish for a lot of things, they usually have something to do with a job. I wish I was an author, I was I was a band manager, I wish I was a equipment manager for the St Louis Cardinals, I wish I was a youth ministry (sometimes), I wish I was a speaker, I wish I was a UPS driver, and that is just in the last week.
You get the point, I wish I could do a lot of things. But mainly I have been thinking about the exciting world of being a book or magazine publisher. Saturday the latest Apple creation was released and the world of publishing was changed forever (that really is arguable, mainly because the kindle and nook have been out for a little while now). But the iPad could change the way media is published, and that is a very exciting thing to think about.

There is something that excites/scares me about a blank canvas. The idea that you literally have a blank canvas to work with and the stars are the limit. I really think the publishing world has a blank canvas to work with. The weird thing about this all is that I do not work for a publishing company, but the thought of the dreaming that these people get to do makes me wish I was. I am one of those weird people that like meetings. I love to be with a team that gets to tackle a challenge and work together. When I start to think the possibilities of the iPad and other portable media devices I cannot help but see a team of dreamers sitting around a table talking about what they could do.

The allurement of dreaming up new ways of publishing content makes me wish I worked for Thomas Nelson or Relevant Mag right now. I have a ton of ideas that I have running around in my head that I want to talk to others about. I mean how cool would it be to be reading Don  Millers new book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” and actually see the pictures of the inca ruins or a picture of his bike team jumping into the ocean after they had completed a bike journey across the United States? Or for that matter video of these adventures? That is just the tip of the ice berg. Or what about a book that has an interactive community built into the book and you can chat with people in real time (picture a book club) on your iPad while you read a certain chapter. How cool would that be? Or what if relevant magazine did a feature on NeedToBreathe and instead of just talking about their music or a certain song in print, had it there for you to listen to as you read the interview. Or how about for advertisers that use magazines to promote their conference or product, how about instead of just having some print with some pictures you have an interactive advertisement that demonstrated your product and a chance for people to demo right there on the page.

There are times where all I want to do
is sit in a meeting room for 7 hours and dream about what we could do. Call me weird, but I love meetings that involve talking about the future and what we could do.

I won’t share all my ideas here, mainly because I need to save some of them if in fact I get to be apart of a dream meeting with publishers.

How about you,

What is something you want to dream about?
